Usability test after first iteration
After the first iteration, 5 out of 5 users preferred the list view over the map view for jobs search results (Home screen.) However, after doing another round of usability test, users still took longer to toggle to the map view. I modified the design so that it is easier for users to identify the toggle button so they can switch screen views. This is the evolution of the Home screen design:

I made more iterations and some of these are: 1. the overlay to "Apply" button where users can just check the resume they want to use for each application, 2. the profile page as seen by clients - I added the items that users think are important to have a strong profile - samples of work, links to their credentials, and a button for clients to message them directly.

Design Process

The goal of my research was to understand the path that skilled tradespeople take in finding potential clients and the challenges they face in their online job search experience. I conducted remote interviews of 5 skilled tradespeople, ages 18-60 who had searched for job leads in the last 6 months. These workers use various methods to advertise their services - reaching out to old clients, networking with other contractors, advertising on social media, and searching job boards such as Indeed, Zip Recruiter and even Craigslist. On the other hand, there are always clients looking for skilled workers for their home improvement projects.

It would be interesting to explore the route that clients take in using this app - posting jobs, the selection and hiring process, among others. Also, for future iteration, I would like to adhere to the standards in Material Design or other style guidelines to ensure a consistent and familiar user experience.

As an example - because I'm a visual person and like map views - I thought that a default map view was the best way to address the users' needs. However, a list view was surprisingly (for me) preferred by the users. Another thing I learned is to focus on solving the crucial issues by always going back to the problem or pain points one is trying to solve.
